Default Anything Meryl Streep

Okay here it is...the thread in which to go mad about Meryl. Please join the club, because otherwise everyone will think I'm insane.

So I can admit I'm a hopeless fan and have been already for several years.

Favourite films/tv appearances of hers, anyone?

LOL. I like that attitude.

I won't start listing everything I love about Meryl, because everyone else would just fall asleep. Let's just say that The Hours is probably my favourite films of hers besides Sophie's Choice (then again, I have too many favourites amongst her films). That's because it was the film that finally made me realise what an amazing actress she is. Before that I remember seeing The French Lieutenant's Woman and The Bridges of Madison County on tv when I was younger and liked them a lot, but it was only when I went to see The Hours at the cinema that I was totally blown away.

I'll shut up now and will let other people talk as well.

Oh you lucky *¤)(% I wish I had seen The Hours at the cinema... I bet it was really something.
But I actually saw Bridges of madison county at the cinema and was ALSO blown away. I still remember it. It must have been in 1995 or something.

Bridges of Madison County is my fave. Then the Hours, it's close. And all of the hours... I mean the others are somehow in a big bunch more or less, it all depends on my mood which ones I like the best at the moment. Just like with episodes of dr Quinn in a way!!

I love Meryl´s way of somehow transforming herself in each movie. She's not acting, she's transforming herself being the person. It's amazing to see. I can't compare the different parts. She has so many small different details for every character, next to the fact that she changes her hair and accent and what ever! Never stops to surprise.

Another thing I like about Meryl is that she is not displaying her private life to everybody. She keeps her work in focus while she is in public. I admire that.

I went to see The Hours with a friend, but she got really bored and said afterwards: "we always go to see the weird films". I guess it's not for everyone, hehe. I just love the poetic atmosphere of it and every single detail (music, acting, the setting..) creating an artistic experience for the viewer.

I think transforming is definitely the right word for her talent. I still have no idea how she does it. The mannerism changes with every character, suddenly she speaks differently and looks so different. Like if you compare her performances for example in The Devil Wears Prada and Sophie's Choice. One character has the strongest self-confidence ever and the other one is sort of just drifting and trying to survive despite everything that has happened to her. It must take a long time and lots of observation to come up with all those little details that make the characters she plays seem so real and full of life.

Okay rambling off now.

Absolute agreement!!!

I haven't seen all of Meryl Streep's movies, but many. I loved her in Bridges of Madison County, of course she was great in Sophie's Choice, but for some reason I saw this movie only once, and I am not tempted to watch it a second time, probably just because of 'that' scene, the choice scene, which is hardly bearable.
I think my favourite movie of her is French Lieutenants Woman. I like this movie-in-the-movie-thing, and I liked both stories.
There are many more. Oh: Silkwood. She was so cool in Silkwood. Great movie too.

Yep, Sophie's Choice and that scene is beyond words. When I first saw this movie it surprised me how when I thought it was going to end, it somehow just began for real. I don't watch it too often either, it's not easy to become that moved, so I kind of adore the movie but can't bear it at the same time. It's definately her best performance and Kevin Klein is a genius too in his part.

The French Lieutenant's Woman is great too for the reasons you mention Ella.

On the comedy side I really love Death Becomes Her LOL! Meryl as a diva bi%#tch is hilarious.

I totally agree. Sophie's Choice is one of my favourite films ever, because I think the acting in it is just so amazing (Kevin Kline as well...omg), but I can't watch it that much. I've seen it about three times, and it still breaks my heart every single time.

Yes, Silkwood!! Cool Meryl in that one. For some reason I really loved her hair in that film (just to state as a really random fact lol). I also liked the chemistry between her and Cher.

Oh yeah!! I remember first seeing this as a kid and thinking that it was a funny film, but when I finally saw it again, I was able to appreciate all the jokes in it better. Goldie Hawn and Meryl are just so hilarious when they mock everything and everyone from Hollywood world.

LOL! Thanks for the offer! We should have some serious ohmygosh-i-just-luuuurve-her talk sometime soon and spare the eyes of the innocent fellow members from more outbursts of absolute madness in this thread.

ps. Today I have been good. I didn't watch them or click your link even once. I think I'm healed.

What I like the most about Meryl Streep is that you can trust that the movie she is playing in is a good one. I adore The Hours and love Out of Africa and cry every time I watch The Bridges... I never watched Sophie's choice though. Is it an older movie???

Sophie's Choice is older, yes, and Kruemi, I can't believe I've never seen it either!(I'm hiding from Sophy & Jen!). Out of Africa is one I've been wanting to buy on dvd forever, and Bridges of Madison County *SIGH*. I have never even cared about Clint Eastwood as an actor, but that movie...omg, the two of them are just phenomenal.

lol Amy, I hope we aren't that scary!! Oh and Kruemi, I totally agree, there are only a few films of hers that I'm not that keen on, but all the others I have found really interesting.

Kruemi, Sophie's Choice is from 1982. Meryl Streep won her second Oscar for her performance, which I think was so deserved. She really does amazing job with this wrecked character who has physically survived Auschwitz, but not quite mentally. I still consider this one of the best films I've ever seen, simply because the acting in it is so wonderful, almost as if not acting at all. I can't watch it very often, though, because it just breaks my heart (the choice scene...it's unbearable ). But I would definitely recommend it to everyone who appreciates good acting, and well, it's good that films like this are made.

Amy, I am with you when it comes to Clint Eastwood - in The Bridges of Madison County he is great, but otherwise I haven't really seen much of his work. It's another film I can't watch that often at all. Once a year is pretty much my limit lol. But when I watch it...I cry like a baby by the scene in the rain. Sniff. Their acting went to well together. All the emotion was there even when they didn't have any dialogue. One of my favourite scenes ever are the carrot scene (making dinner) and of course the scene where she is on the phone and afterwards they dance. The tension is like woooow!

Amy, I´m in hiding with you, I haven´t (completely) watched Sophie´s Choice yet... I´ve seen very little and remember thinking it was sooo boring. But I think it was my teacher from 9th grade who had us all worked up on this one and then it dissapointed me I really want to give it a second chance because, well, I love Meryl and it sounds like it´s the acting and emotions that are carrying the movie and that was the same thing with the hours.. Without the amazing acting it could have gotten extremely boring too..
