Default Climbing Pikes Peak

Last night I was watching the episode where Michaela decides to climb Pikes Peak...and it got me thinking. So I'm planning a trip - next summer, I'm actually going to do it! I'm pretty excited about it. Has anyone else done it?

You're going to climb a mountain? Cool!

I haven't climbed a mountain really, but I did climb a vulcano two years ago. So cool, and terribly hard to do, since the earth wasn't easy to walk on. The surface was all ashes which makes you slip/fall/lose your balance very easily. I was totally exhausted when I was finally at the top. But so awesome! Awesome view and I was just so proud of myself... I'm afraid of heights and thank God it was very foggy during the climb, so I couldn't really see depths. However, when I was at the top, the fog disappeared, the sun started to shine and we got to see that awesome view! And depths of course... The way down freaked me out most, especially because of all the depths I saw and because of the incredible soft soil that made everyone fall and slip... But I made it all the way in one piece. So cool...

That sounds very exciting! I haven't climbed a mountain too, but I would like to . I think it's awesome to see all the views and the nature . When I'll visit America some day *dreaming*, I hope to climb, or at least see, the Pikes Peak. Good luck with it! And please let us know about your experiences

I definitely will. I think I'm going in July, so expect a big post after that date!

LovelyLène: I'm hoping for the same experience at the top of the peak as yours at the top of the volcano - which is really cool! What volcano? I talked to my uncle today, who climbed it in 1994, and he said the trail is fairly sturdy until towards the top, so it sounds better than a soft slippery volcano slope! Wow!

I climbed Mount Vesuvius in Italy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Vesuvius

While climbing Mount Vesuvius it's really hard to stay on your feet, especially while climbing down. The soil is really soft, because of the huge ammount of ashes on it. I do believe it's different from any vulcano. It depends on the type, when the last erruption was, etc. The ground is pretty solid until half way; there's a road for cars, busses, etc. so you can be taken halfway the vulcano. However, if you want to reach the top, you have to do the rest on foot. You could buy canes and stuff to keep steady and hold your balance. I was stubborn however, and did it without a cane. I was exhausted when I finally reached the top. But it was so worth it!

You will climb Pike's Peak??? That's wonderful!! They have a link to the mountain on the homepage of Colorado Springs
http://www.pikespeakcolorado.com/

If you click on the Peak cams, you can take a look around and see what is awaiting you . I'm looking forward to hear about your experiences up there .

Wow, yes I suppose if you're going to climb a volcano, climb the most famous one! How cool! I'd love to visit there some day.

LOL Kruemi - I'll admit, I've been visiting that site almost every day now!
