Lightbulb Quinn-sciences & Dr. Mike's medicines

Has anyone tasted it? Am I crazy if I actually consider trying it?

At school we made some determinations of acetylsalicylic acid and our teacher mentioned it can be found in willow bark. You can imagine how I couldn't stop grinning

I can believe it tastes bitter but I could be willing to try, only because Dr. Mike used it

Maybe this belongs to non-DQ-section but for me it's strongly DQ-related

Edited from 'Willow bark tea etc.' to make a topic for anything related to Dr. Mike's medicines or science in DQ. - Lizzie

I haven't myself, but I can definitely understand your curiosity... I find the biology/chemistry/medical aspects of DQ really intesting too! Edit: interesting article, Amber!

For me too. Actually I might suggest 'Random Quinn-stuff: Topics related to Dr. Quinn'... may I move it? Maybe we could make a thread: 'Willow bark tea etc.', on Dr. Mike's medicines, or herbal remedies, DQ-related science... what do you think? (Mervi and everyone ) I have another potential post...

Thank you Amber It was really informative. I think I'll try it sometime, propably next time I visit my parents, I wouldn't want to eat willow from city environment.

Lizzie, you may move the thread and rename it so all different DQ-medicines can be discussed.

Edit. All sciences! We had a course of inorganic chemistry and made test like Dr. Mike on Bad Water. LOL.

Oops LOL, just renamed it! I'm out of time now I'm afraid, but will be back later, or maybe Sophy, Kruemi, Jenni, Ella or Doc will take care of it before.

Btw Mervi, I'm not deliberately picking on you, you're just very unlucky to be online the same time as me again! JK

Done (hope no-one minds if I added the lightbulb icon - it looked fitting, hehe)

A year or two ago I visited a place called Alnwick Castle, which had large gardens, including 'The Poison Garden'. It contained plants that have toxic or medicinal (often both) properties. (There were signs around saying 'do not touch, sniff or eat any of the plants in the garden!', for obvious reasons!) I found it really interesting to see the different things there (I was good and obeyed the signs ), and a large number of them were mentioned on Dr. Quinn at some point. I remember:
willow trees
belladonna (atropine)
the plant strychnine comes from
also stramonium I think (Ingrid used it for her asthma)
poppies (opium, laudanum, morphine)
foxglove (digitalis).

There were also cannabis and coca plants, although I don't think these two were mentioned in DQ! (Actually, I think I read somewhere that some 19th century doctors did use cocaine, and I'm pretty sure modern-day dentists and doctors use a very close derivative. But I'm rambling, sorry. )

Thans Lizzie! Now the name is perfect

It took me ages to realize what willow is. I didn't bother to check it on my dictionary and I was really surprised when I found out. Willows are everywhere but I never thought there would be any use for them. Except making whistles, they are good for that

I was a bit disappointed in our inorganic chemistry lab when we didn't determine mercury. I guess it's because it's such a poisonous element.
