Fortnightly Discussion of a Randomly Chosen Episode - 17. 8. 09
I swear I had this done last Tuesday; I simply forgot that yesterday was the day when it was supposed to be posted . As to the picture for this place: It will be but in .A Cowboy’s Lullaby - season 1 I think that this episode only makes sense when it is put even before Epidemic (in the suggested logical order of the episodes on the DQMW website it is put after it). I know ACL was aired later; maybe it was produced as a *filling* episode. I have proof for my assumption though: not only Brian’s Pup is smaller than in Epidemic but the boarding house is still sealed with the boards Sully took down in Epidemic plus Michaela buys the wagon she uses from then on.(and only after re-watching I noticed that neither Olive nor Grace are in town yet). The opening scene with the family having breakfast is just hilarious. It shows how Michaela still struggles with normal chores like preparing a meal, but it also shows that the children have already grown on her for they endure her cooking ‘skills’ with humor. I forgot to take notes while watching – because I simply enjoyed what I saw, and I remembered why I fell in love with the show: there is a story enfolding with so many characters and actions… We learn that Michaela still doesn’t have patients, so she goes to them (and is paid with all kind of food). Asked for help by the Reverend, she doesn’t hesitate but goes looking for Luke Silver (and we can see a real bear here ). The way she cares for the baby once it is abandoned is just typical for her. I love her for her big heart. It is fun to watch the Cooper children: Brian with his constant asking, Colleen how she takes charge for everything and Matthew how he tries to get out of all the mess at home. But most important we can watch them how they stay to each other, how the older siblings care for Brian when he fears he might have lost another mother. I like Emily in this episode, and once again I wonder why they dropped her character. She is kind and eager to help without being judging. And not to forget: it is her who makes sure that the baby isn’t given to that family that treats the children they adopt like slaves. (Btw, here is another proof for this episode belonging before epidemic - her husband is still alive.) As to Jake: I was astonished that he was willing to help an Indian baby. Loren, on the other hand, was his usual curious self when he tries to find out who Michaela’s patient is. Although he leaves his baby behind, I like Red McCall because he only wants to do the best for his son. Maybe I’m a bit blindfolded when it comes to him, but I believe that a man who sings such a great lullaby to his baby can’t be a bad character. Nope, I haven’t forgotten Sully . I was a bit startled when he jumped at the kids because they used his child’s clothes. He wasn’t often as harsh with them later, if at all (with Michaela he was, but not with the kids). But for the rest of the story he’s just the hero we expect him to be: not only does he save Michaela’s life, he also convinces Red to take care of his son and to give back the stolen money.I still like to mention another character to love: Eddy, the man who ‘owned the right to sit naked on a chair when he feels that way’ .All in all, I like this episode. For me, it is a charming one.

I absolutely love this episode!!! Of course you knew that already
![]() I think your introduction is perfect. There are so many moments to love in this episode! The song is beautiful, of course. I think you're right about the placement of it, in fact I made sure my friend watched DQ for the first time in the right order so she just saw this episode last night Anyway, I love that Emily was so open to helping the baby...and hated that she was so abruptly quelched in her wish. I also love that Michaela realizes that her heart and home are big enough to care for this infant as well. It shows how much she's learned about what a family is as opposed to what it's supposed to be according to society. I have to go rewatch this now so I can say more...but I'd probably end up just quoting your whole post

I never truly understood the importance of logical viewing order until I tried it, with this episode. It just fit so perfectly behind the pilot that it left me wondering why I hadn't always tried the LVO of the seasons.
The majority of this episdoe (IMO) is still very much a "getting to know you" as far as Michaela goes, not only for the people of the town, but for us. We get to see her introduce herself to perspective new patients and in turn get her introduction to us throw her words. I remembered being enamored with the fact that she introduces herself as a "General Surgeon" though she does much else, (something I don't think I realized at the time) but the episode brought up another question for me. How Female doctors had to change the way men and women interacted in order to treat patients (I posted a topic about this on the site called "Reputations of the 19th century" so I won't go into it here). But mostly I love the way that it is just a feel good episode. I feel that the events of The Epidemic are a little too fast paced to come right off the pilot with. We never got ot see the children get used to Michaela (something I would have loved because I think that transition would have been difficult) aside from what we saw in the pilot and we didn't get to see Sully and MIchaela's relationship grow to the point where he should want to kiss her one the forehead after being sick (IMO that was a little hasty) So this fits in there quickly. I wish I could add more, but my DVDS are three states away, and it's been a while since I've seen this, but there is one last thing that I found interesting. When Michaela and Sully were trapped in the house by the bear. Sully said that if she couldn't find a home for the baby he would raise it. Now, I understand what led him to that desicion, but how much would that have changed his life. he was the nomad who sort of traveled with the wind, and I don't think he meant that the Cheyenne would raise the baby. How do you think that would have changed the dynamic of the show? do you even think that he thought all of that through when he said it?

I'll place the idea up for bidding! But I agree with Sadie, I'm pulling myself from any more possible fic ideas as well. BTW Sadie, forgive for i'm proabably far behind, but I'm really enjoying your banners. I haven't read in of your fic, but I may dig up some next time I have a reading spree.

Yeah. I'm so swamped with the fics I'm writing and the independent original novel(s) - (yes plural...that's about 5 books are in my head right now) - that I couldn't possibly do anything else. Even if I felt like I COULD write Sully well... Quote:
I'll continue with the Matthew's Hope ones until I move onto Mind's Eye again...</end threadjacking again> |

This is a great episode. I agree that Sully's reaction to the children taking his baby's clothes is a bit surprising, but I think seeing those clothes forced him to once again think of things he would much rather forget, and he unexpectedly strikes out because of it. And realizing how strongly he still feels about losing his family is what allows him to change Red's mind about leaving his son.
I feel a tiny bit sorry for Michaela, who has obviously gotten attached to the child, and is forced to give him up to Red just when she realizes that she can provide a good home for him. It makes me wonder how things would have turned out if Sully had never stumbled upon Red. Sully had already offered to take him, so would he and Michaela have become involved sooner as they worked together to care for the child? Another fan fiction in the making. I have to ask because it's bugging me, does John Schneider have a fake mustache in this episode? It doesn't look natural to me. |
